Structural Learning

As part of our ICS placement we are all asked to hold one session to educate the team about a development issue that we feel particularly strongly towards... these are our structural learning sessions!

Beth Milburn
Week 1 - Global Inequality and Trade Injustice by Beth Milburn:

Beth kicked off our structural learning sessions by talking about global inequality and trade injustice. She spoke about how well managed trade has the possibility to bring millions out of poverty but how there are many obstacles in the way. She highlighted the ways in which we can get involved to help stop this issue and injustice.

David Karemara
Week 2 - The Significance of ICT in Development by David Karemara:

Our team leader David chose to do his structural learning on the importance of ICT in development. He focused on how ICT is particularly important in education and the future of young people. This was highlighted by the ‘One Laptop Per Child’ scheme currently being implemented in Rwanda.

Chinwe Soares
Week 3 - Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) by Chinwe Soares:

This weeks structural learning was led by Chinwe. Her aim was to educate us all about Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and how it affects the lives on those involved. She also talked to us about how we can work together to stop FGM, and the schemes and campaigns that are currently in place.

Lion-Sam
Week 4 - Genocides around the World by Lion-Sam:

Lion-Sam used his structural learning slot to talk about genocides that have happened throughout history. His chosen focuses were: the Ottoman genocide, the holocaust, the Bosnian genocide, the Cambodian genocide and the Rwandan genocide. He also highlighted the work that AEGIS are doing to educate people about mass atrocities.

Rachel Garner
Week 5 - Human Trafficking by Rachel Garner:

The development issue Rachel chose to focus on was Human Trafficking. She spoke about how it is a global crime and one that affects all of us. She also told us how we can be pro-active to stop the support system of human trafficking. And finally she spoke about the successes that organisations such as stopthetraffik have had so far in the battle against trafficking.

Claire Umumararungu
Week 6 -  The Return of Jesus by Claire Umumararungu:

Claire chose to do her structural learning presentation about the second coming of Jesus Christ - she focused on the different signs that the Bible gives us. She reinforced the notion that although we cannot predict when Christ will return, it would be silly not to take heed and listen to the warnings from the Bible.

Vicky chose to do her structural learning on the views that people have of disabilities.
